Playing the Changes - Tracking Darius Brubeck

By Michiel ten Kleij en Maarten in 't Hout

Playing the Changes follows Darius Brubeck, son of jazz legend Dave Brubeck, who defied the apartheid regime in South Africa to found the continent's first university jazz program—open to everyone, regardless of race. The film is a powerful exploration of how music creates unity and how jazz serves as a universal symbol for freedom and equality.

Proven Success
The documentary is fully completed and has received worldwide acclaim. Following its Dutch premiere at the Music Film Festival, it traveled to two Oscar-qualifying festivals in the United States: the Rhode Island International Film Festival and the RiverRun International Film Festival.

The Opportunity
While the film has conquered the festival circuit, it is currently "locked" for broader audiences. As an independent production, the archival footage rights were cleared for festivals only. To unlock its potential for TV broadcast (NPO) and global streaming, we need to "scale up" these rights.

The Mission
We are seeking €40,000 to cover the final image and archival clearances. By securing this funding, we ensure this vital story of courage and rhythm reaches the wide audience it deserves.
